Thomas Van Der Vliet
1. what first inspired you to become a drummer?
To be honest i can't remember. When i was a kid i thought the drums were cool, naturally,
so i went to the conservatorium for lessons and ended up there for 6 or 7 years before i moved to
Melbourne, and here i am.
2. anything that you’ve learnt along the way that’s really helped you as a drummer?
I would definately reccommend playing more than one musical style. Doing so has improved my playing and abilities as a musician. I play a lot of Rock n' Roll but styles like Soul and Jazz really
challange me and help me to focus on my reading and time.
3. who have you and/or who are you playing with at the moment and what are the bands movements/Anything to plug?
I play in 3 bands at the moment. 2 original and 1 coverband. Saint James is a 5 piece Rock n' Roll
band that my friend and I put together about 3 years ago. We all grew up together in the country
and made the trip to the big smoke to find our fortune, which we're still working on.
Master Cardinal are a 3 piece Blues/Rock band that met and formed at Uni in Melbourne.
Saint James have an EP comming out in a month or so. To Check it out go to myspace.com/saintjames5
4. what gear are you using at present
I play a white Gretsch Catalina Club. I Love it because it's big, old school and sounds like thunder!
I play a brass Ludwig snare that i bought off my my previous teacher, i think it's pretty similar to
the one Bonham used. I use Meinl cymbols, Gibraltar hardware and an embarrassing asortment of broken miss matched sticks...
5. what would be your dream gig?
Playing a sold out stadium gig on the moon?
6. favourite drummers and/or bands and why?
John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes) and Nathan Followill (Kings Of Leon)
I love and admire these guys and the bands they were in because they all have/had thier own style and approach to drumming/music.
