Martin Steinocker
1. what first inspired you to become a drummer?
I purchased a double cassette called ‘Three Sides Live’ by Genesis back in 1987. It featured Chester Thompson, Phil Collins and Bill Bruford blazing away on their kits. After listening to two hours of huge drums fills and crafty ghost notes, I decided I wanted to play an 8 piece Gretsch drum kit!!
After coming to my senses I bought an old Premier kit and played along to my mums records. My uncle was a jazz drummer so he would show me lots of videos of Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd, Steve Smith and Terry Bozzio.
2. anything that you’ve learnt along the way that’s really helped you as a drummer?
Over the years I have learnt the importance of working as a team. Never waste people’s time or behave badly. Don’t ever get big headed about yourself and think you are a rock star. There are plenty of good players at all levels that deserve respect for what they do.
3. who have you and/or who are you playing with at the moment and what are the bands movements? Anything to plug?
My main band at the moment is called The Pryor Theory. We were Triple J Unearthed winners at last years Big Day Out competition. We are currently finishing our debut LP “El Futuro” which will be available by August from iTunes. We are currently playing shows on the east coast.
I have always tried to play different styles like jazz/metal with Slimey Things (Syd), Samba Reggae with Black Paul and Alt Country with The Drivers Eyes.
4. what gear are you using at present?
I use a hybrid kit which I mix up depending on the gig. I use a 16x18 Premier kick, 22x18 DW kick, some Ludwig snares and a Roland SPD-S.
5. what would be your dream gig?
A stadium gig playing at sunset.
6. favourite drummers and/or bands and why?
Omar Hakim, Will Calhoun, Carlton (Carly) Barrett, Pete Luscombe, Con Settinery, Gallas Niang and the drummers and percussionists of Brazil. They all have a great groove that makes you want to play!
