Peter Maslen - Drummers Club

The Drummers Club is honored to welcome Peter 'Maz' Maslen, this April Tuesday the 27th. Peter has had a remarkable career as witnessed by some of his playing credits below. We are in for a treat as Peter discusses life as a recording artist and just what is required to be a successful studio drummer. This is a must see for anyone who harbours thoughts/dreams of recording with a band or actually being a session musician. I expect to see you all there. This is an unbelievable opportunity to learn from someone who's CV speaks for itself.

Peter 'Maz' Maslen
Born in Cairns in 1959, I started playing a drum kit around 12 years old because my cousins were also musical and played in bands.

My seminal influence, is music from the late 60's and into the 70's.

I moved to Australia's music capital Melbourne at 19.

In the house I was living, there was a small recording studio and this is where I learnt the craft of recording.
My housemate and studio owner, was keen to one day own and run a major recording studio.
This studio, is today known as Sing Sing Studios in Richmond, Melbourne.

In 1984, I met the other members of Boom Crash Opera. We made 6 studio albums, toured incessantly and travelled the world.

During that and after those years, I was consistently hired as a recording and touring drummer, having played on some 35+ albums and toured the world.

The list below contains the names of some of the artists I have worked with in the last 30 years.

Drummers Club - Rod Gilbert Feb 2010

This Feb to open up the Drummers Club for 2010 we are very happy to welcome our very own Rod Gilbert who will be discussing all things jazz - this is a first for us. Rod will be discussing, Jazz Independence, Comping, Solo concepts (drums as a improvisational instrument) and the many genres of jazz..

Rod Gilbert has been a well known drummer and singer on the Australian Jazz Swing Circuit for the past 10 years since founding the Premier 4-piece Swing Band, The Shuffle Club in 1999.

Performing live since the age of 16, Rod has performed with an array of accomplished jazz musicians from both Australia and overseas, covering many different genres, giving him a vast understanding of all the many jazz styles.

At the age of 32 he is firmly established as one of the most sought-after front men of Swing as well as a force to be reckoned with when behind a drum kit.  He is a familiar figure as part of the Shuffle Club in jazz, arts and cabaret festivals throughout Australia, Japan and the UK with critics comparing his sound to the likes of Art Blakey, Philly Joe Jones and Max Roach.

This man has a unique ability to make every member of an audience feel that they are experiencing a truly personal performance.

This will be one not to miss and what a way to open up the new season of the Drummers Club!
