On the last Tuesday night of each month we play host to some of Melbourne’s finest players as they demonstrate their wares.
The Drummers Club this Tuesday the 28th Of July 2009 will feature our special guest Konrad Park. The topic for discussion will be Indian Tabla drums and how to adapt the sounds and rhythms to the drumset. A traditional interpretation of each tal will be given to convey the most standard or ligitimate representation of the tabla rhythms. Contemporary interpretations of each rhythm will then be given and by way of contrast, giving attendees the tools to broaden their repertoire of grooves and ideas.
Breakdown of Konrad's Workshop:
1. Breakdown of tabla bols (sounds) and their equivalent sounds on the kit with a suggested drum key & notation.
2. Tals covered will include:
Kaharva 8 beat
Dadra 6 beat
Teen 16 beat
Rupak 7 beat
Deepchandi 14 beat
3. Each tal will played on tabla then adapted to full drum kit. A traditional interpretation of each tal will be given to convey the most standard or ligitimate representation of the tabla rhythms. Contemporary interpretations of each rhythm will then be given and by way of contrast, giving students the tools to broaden their repertoire of grooves and ideas inspiring further applications and investigation of North Indian rhythms.
4. Double time and solo figures. I will demystify the long solo passages known as kaidas & paltas which define the virtuosity of tabla playing by performing the transcriptions offered. I will also describe how these kaidas can be adapted to inspire different choices for improvisation and a different contour and line of rhythm.
5. I will finish the workshop with performances from my forthcoming cd which incorporate some of the suggested rhythms and provide the students with a musical context which will highlight the musicality and versatility of these rhythms.

Bio - Bio:
Konrad is a “Big Picture” drummer with a broad musical concept.
He is an inspiring and passionate performer, teacher and communicator who has performed nationally for over 20 years. He is regularly invited interstate to teach ensemble & private lessons. Konrad has been infiltrating Melbourne over the last 12 months having conducted workshops at Melbourne University for Rob Cossom (MSO) and performed with local percussion legend, Tanya Bosak and Beijao, a Brazillian Jazz/Haitian funk outfit and gospel with MMGC. He has performed as part of Brian Ritchies (Violent Femmes) Shakuhatchi Club, a free world /jazz improv project including such talents as Adam Simmons and Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil).
Recent collaborations include Jazzistry, a 3 piece Hammond combo with TimNeal (Hamond) and Konrad’s long time friend and musical collaborator Simon Patterson (guitar). Ghost Drive, a 3 piece live Drum & Bass outfit is soon to be unleashed as acollaboration with Karl Willerbrant (bass). Tanya Bosak & Beijao continue to perform locally with it’s exotic grooves & good humour! The Laundry Van, a 3 piece free improv outfit displays Konrad’s other love, the Chapman Stick. The Stick has provided Konrad with a powerful tool from which to write exciting contemporary music.
Konrad’s strong groove has been the backbone for such artists as multi Grammy Award winner Lucky Oceans’ Zydecats, Renee Geyer, Perth based funk/jazz outfit Thrust and the bombastic rock musicality of Jaye Hanson trio (Tas).
Always willing to share ideas and experience; Konrad is determined to further his music and contribute to the musical and cultural landscape in his new home, Melbourne.
