PRESENTS

 .

If you are a drummer with a love for ‘in the pocket’ playing, then we want to hear from you.

BPMDGC will be an annual competition that aims to find the best player in Victoria devoted to ‘feel’ based drum kit playing.

Why have a competition?

Recently within the drumming community there has been too much emphasis placed on technique and chops (drumming gymnastics if you like) at the expense of playing what is appropriate or ‘for the song’.

Through my involvement with drumming, I have come to witness an under-current of dissatisfaction by lovers of the craft with the current focus so heavily skewed towards chops and how fast a drummer can play, that now, many of my customers say to me ‘what happened to playing for the song?’

Don’t get me wrong, I love a drum solo but give me a drummer grooving “their arse off” any day or night.

What type of event will BPMDGC be?

BPMDGC is an annual event that will embrace the world of groove playing and draw together drummers from all ages and styles in a day devoted to ‘in the pocket’ drum kit playing.

The criteria

To find two drummers in the 16 and under and open section with the best groove playing in Victoria.

The winner of each section will receive some amazing prizes supplied by our friends at Mapex Drums, Bosphorus, Gretsch and Kahzan Cymbals.

What are we looking for when we say groove?

This will be demonstrated by showing the ability to play the song, be able to sit “in the pocket”, display good time, listen and work with other musicians, and finally to play with ‘feel’.

Ultimately the aim is to encourage people to play musically, not just chop out or show off.

Where will the BPMDGC be held?

The event will be held at the Kingston Arts Centre on the 29th of June 2008. This will be a dynamic event attracting a diverse crowd and employing a live band for the finalists to play along with.

Entry criteria

To be eligible to enter the competition you must meet the following criteria:

  1. All players must agree to abide by the rules of the competition.

To enter,  simply send in a VHS video, DV tape or DVD of yourself playing on an acoustic kit on your own with no other musicians, for no more than two minutes. When recording yourself you must play within one of the following categories:

  1. Rock
  2. Funk
  3. Hip Hop / R’n B’
  4. Varied-this includes: Latin/Afro Cuban, Reggae, Drum’n’Bass, Country, Roots & Blues

To print the entry form, please click here and then print the page by going to File > Print in the menu or by pressing CTRL-P.

Entries close on the Monday June 9th

How will contestants be chosen?

Once all entries have been received they will be viewed by a panel of judges who will then select the eight finalists for each section of the competition. Finalists will be contacted by Revolver Drums.
