Putting the "Groove" Into The Groove
with Craig Blundell
There
are so many elements that make a drum track "groove". Sometimes we
forget to go back to simple striking and the basics to compose our
part. It's not all about filling the bar with as many notes as you have
in your vocabulary to make something sound great, it can just be subtle
accents or patterns that will lift a drum part. Lets concentrate on two
semi quavers and get the right hand "into the groove".
This simple and effective sticking pattern will:
So, here we go. The pattern that will be used throughout the exercise’s below is played on the hi-hat with the right hand. |
1. Let's add bass drum and snare to start. |
2. Now we are adding bass drum to the 4th note and you can start to hear how effective it sounds. |
3. If we add a left hand on the 8th note it lifts the groove. |
4. Now replace that left hand with the right foot. We are now playing a greate groove. It's important to be a bit more aggresive on the hi-hat with this one to make it drive a bit more. |
5. Now we're going to concentrate on the first two semi-quavers and get the bass drum in sync with the right hand. |
6. Once you are comfortable, let's also add a bass drum on the 4th semi-quaver |
7. Now we can add a left hand on the 8th note. |
8. Now for the ultimate "right side" work out. Replace the snare drum with a bass drum on the 8th note, which means you are now playing 3 semi-quavers back to back with your right foot... enjoy! |
