The Magic Of Mistakes
Now as a result of not having a plan to play to you can stretch your self out a bit and its here that the possibility of making mistakes will happen. You are cruising along and you go for an idea of a tricky fill or something and half way through you blow the timing or the sticking and lose it, just smile and see if you can do it next time. The best thing is though that you tried it and it didn't work this time but next it might and if it had've worked the first time WOW it would've sounded great, spontaneous and better than what you could maybe have done had you planned it out so to speak.
This concept will give you the energy and the drive to reach to levels of ideas that are in your head but locked in by the normal constraints we put our playing and performances under.
We can do this idea at the practice, rehearsal and the gig or performance level and each level has its own feel and outcome for the player. Practice will be very selfish and self indulgent but get great new ideas, the rehearsal will bring about great new feels for the band and a good sense of comradery with the players and if you can relax enough at a gig or show to do it you will feel the best you can at a gig. To pull off a tricky dangerous fill at a gig correctly and an idea that basically just came to you is fantastic it lifts your mood and satisfaction up to a new level you will want every time.
I suggest you give this concept a try if you can and if you aren't yet at the level hopefully you will get there and really enjoy what it's like to play, freely.
Thanks
Dean
