Triplet Replacement Fills
Let’s get started then. We will do a 1/8th note triplet count first and
we all know that it will be 1&a 2&a 3&a 4&a. Now play
this on the snare only to begin and ensure that you have the feel, the
count and the rhythmus correct. Now for our first exercise:
Drop the “a” form the hand and replace it with bass drum and do this for each set. So what you will have here is snare-snare-bass, snare-snare-bass, etc in a nice rounded triplet count, keep doing this until the concept is smooth and rounded and there is no hesitation.
Now drop off the 1 2 3 4 from the set so what you will have here is bass-snare-snare, bass-snare-snare etc. continue to pratice this until you have this smooth and rounded with no hesitation.
Now drop off the “&” from each set so what you will have now is snare-bass-snare, snare-bass-snare etc. Continue to pratice this until you have this smooth and rounded with no hesitation.
So now you have three very easy but complex sounding patterns to play and practice and perfect and put into your daily practice of triplet style beats. Do it with your beats in the manner setout above for a while until you get the hang of it.
After a while you can substitute different toms etc for the snare hits and really start to get creative and complex.
This technique if done correctly and practiced to a good level will make your drum fills come alive, sounds more pro and be more fun and open up a range of similar possibilities that you hadnt thought of before.
Is simple to do and get good at so jump on the kit and give it a go.
