Passion

Once I started to get a sniff of being able to play the drums and actually recognize songs, groves etc that I was playing I was hooked, what I mean here is that no matter what, not one day would ever pass that I wouldn’t practice my kit or rudiments or something.  If I hadn’t played that day I would be in the worst mood until I had at least grabbed my sticks and done something, even 10 minutes was better than nothing, that just the way it was.

This did cause concern for friends, partners etc but to me at the time playing and more importantly getting better at the kit was the focus of my life. I had a passion for it. It wasn’t a chore or a task to remind myself to do or find ways of getting out of it unless I had to, it was like eating or breathing, I just did it, it was part of me and who I was.

I mean one year a friend of mine was getting married one Saturday, where do you think I was, at the wedding – no, I was at a rehearsal for a new act I was doing. Yes I could have postponed the rehearsal but from where I was at that time the rehearsal was the most important activity for me to do that day, that’s it.

At the time I thought I was pretty full on with my commitment but you know what, I met plenty of other musos who had more commitment and passion than what I did and that scared me. This is what I now know was the difference between the levels of achievement that any one person attains in their own chosen path.

I am going to close today by simply saying, look into yourself and find what it is that makes you feel something, what do you love and what are you passionate about, it may not be the drums, but what ever it is, this is what you are going to be giving your best shot at and making your dreams come true
