A Great Rudiment Workout - Part 1
OK we will approach from the 1/16th note count on all of these first.
1. Play a single stroke 1/16th note pattern on the snare. Get this nice and smooth and grooving along. Now firstly add your hihat foot in on the count of 2 and 4. Once you have made this happen smoothly stop this and add your bass drum in on 1 +3 +1 +3 etc. So now we have a pattern on the bass drum doing a Latin kind of sound. Now for the best part, add your hihat foot back in on the 2 & 4 so you are now using both your hands and your feet at the same time in a cool sounding pattern. KEEP doing this for a long time. The idea is to really hone in on the sound and the feel of the pattern so you can add the next part of the task.
2. Once you have got this moving along nicely its time to do it with a 1/16th double stroke roll on the hands and everything else the same as before in regard to your feet. This will be trickier as you need to concentrate on the double pattern but if you have a good grasp of your rudiments it will work.
3. Now for the final variation, play your 1/16th note as a parradiddle on your hands and join in the feet just as before. Now you have some really nice hand foot coordination occurring. This one will also be tricky but it is achievable and it sounds and feels good to play.
After you can play these three variations easily try to change drums etc to get more sounds and rhythm combos happening.
It’s the best fun and great for your overall coordination, try it.
