Parradiddle Beats
Now add in your bass drum on 1 and 3 to give you a tight pulse and
the start of the beat. Next play the snare on the 2 and 4. You
will have to take your stick off the hihat in order to do it. As you
are doing a parradiddle keep the sticking pattern going just hit the
2 and 4 count on the snare, hint here, right hand for lefties and
left hand for righties. Once this is sorted just keep going and feel
that great pulse that only this rudiment can give you.
Now next I want you to take your leading hand, hint here, left for lefties and right for others and play the ride cymbal. What we have going on here is a great mix of two sounds all the while still playing the parraddidle. Sit on this for a bit to get the pulse happening, all the time focus on the pulse and the correct execution of the rudiment and the tight placement of the bass drum and snare.
At this point we can make it really fun and start to experiment with different bass drum patterns that you can get from your notes or books, it works great with 1/8th note beats as its pretty simple and it works great with 1/16th note beats as you get some great sounds and excellent combinations to get your limbs into.
So we can do all hihat or hihat and ride cymba or toms it doesn’t really matter just keep the rudiment strong and solid and the ideas will flow for this one it cant but not.
If you are having a drama getting the coordination down it will most likely be a rudiment problem just keeping working on your technique until it sharpens up, it will if you work at it. Good luck and have fun.
